Long-legged fly

Japanese: アシナガバエ（英語表記）long‐legged fly

A general term for insects belonging to the family Dolichopodidae of the order Diptera (illustration). As the name suggests, they have very long legs. Due to the shape of their antennae, they are classified as part of the group Stratus in the suborder Brachyceratoidea. Adults range in size from tiny to over 10 mm. Wing veins and wing markings are characteristic of each species. Male antennae and external genitalia are also very distinctive. The body is usually shiny green or blue, but some species are brown or yellowish. Adults live in a variety of locations, including undergrowth in forests, on fallen tree trunks, tree trunks, stones in mountain streams and nearby grass, muddy and sandy areas on the coast, and on rocky reefs exposed to spray.
