Born February 7, 1824. A pastor in the Methodist Episcopal Church. After serving in China, he came to Japan in 1873 and preached in Yokohama. He served on the New Testament translation committee. In 1881, he became the head of the Tokyo English School (now Aoyama Gakuin). He returned to Japan in 1946. He passed away on August 18, 1907. He was 83 years old.
