A former town in Sanbu County in northeastern Chiba Prefecture. It straddles the Kujukuri Plain and the Shimousa Plateau. The main settlement developed as a town on the Choshi Kaido road. Field and rice farming is practiced. There is an industrial complex, with metal processing, food manufacturing, and other businesses operating there. The Sobu Main Line runs through the town. In March 2006, it merged with Narito Town, Sanbu Town, and Hasunuma Village in Sanbu County to form Sanbu City. Area 37.59 km2 . Population 11,364 (2003). 千葉県北東部,山武(さんぶ)郡の旧町。九十九里平野と下総(しもうさ)台地にまたがる。主集落は銚子街道の街村として発達。畑作,稲作を行う。工業団地があり,金属加工,食品製造などの企業が進出している。総武本線が通じる。2006年3月,山武郡成東町,山武町,蓮沼村と合併し市制,山武市となる。37.59km2。1万1364人(2003)。
