A goddess who had been widely worshipped in Asia Minor since before the 5th century BCE. Her name comes from the name of a mountain in Phrygia. She was the patron deity of mountains, forests, and wild beasts, and was also called the Great Mother and Mother of the Gods. Together with her lover Atcis, she was subjected to wild ceremonies by castrated and cross-dressed priests. In the Greek world, she was identified with Rhea, the mother of the gods, but remained a god of the Barbarians. In Rome, she was incorporated into the official religion, marking the beginning of the penetration of Eastern religions into Rome. Her festival was celebrated with great pomp in Rome every year from March 15 to 27.
