Norwegian composer. Born in Bergen to a Scottish father and a Norwegian mother. Studied at the Leipzig Conservatory, and made his debut as a pianist and composer in his hometown in 1862. In 1864 he met Norwegian composer R. Norløk (1842-1866) in Copenhagen, and solidified his inclination towards nationalistic music rooted in the musical traditions of his country. In 1866 he settled in Christiania (now Oslo), and thereafter worked as a conductor in various places. He was active in establishing musical societies in Copenhagen and Oslo to introduce Norwegian composers, and played a leading role in establishing Norwegian national music. His representative works include the theatre music Peer Gynt (1874-1875) and its two orchestral suites, the Piano Concerto in A minor (1868), the ten piano pieces Lyric Pieces (1867-1901), the Cello Sonata (1883), and three violin sonatas (1865, 1867, 1886-1887). ノルウェーの作曲家。ベルゲンで,スコットランド系の父とノルウェー人の母の間に生まれる。ライプチヒ音楽院に学び,1862年郷里でピアノ奏者,作曲家としてデビュー。1864年ノルウェーの作曲家R.ノールローク〔1842-1866〕とコペンハーゲンで知り合い,自国の音楽的伝統に根ざした国民主義的音楽への志向を固めた。1866年クリスティアニア(現オスロ)に居を定め,以後指揮者としても各地で活躍。コペンハーゲンとオスロに音楽協会をつくって自国作曲家の紹介に努めるなど精力的に活動し,ノルウェー国民音楽の確立に主導的な役割を果たした。代表作に,劇音楽《ペール・ギュント》(1874年−1875年)とその2つの管弦楽組曲,《ピアノ協奏曲イ短調》(1868年),10集からなるピアノ曲《抒情小曲集》(1867年−1901年),《チェロ・ソナタ》(1883年),三つのバイオリン・ソナタ(1865年,1867年,1886年−1887年)などがあり,歌曲にも名品が多い。→ディリアス
