Mammon (English spelling)

Japanese: マンモン（英語表記）Mammon; Mamōnas

A Christian term referring to the personification of the evil desire for earthly wealth. It is said to come from the Aramaic word ma'mona, which means wealth. It is not used in the Old Testament, and in the New Testament, there are only a few instances of its use as a quote from Jesus, except for Matthew 6:24, where Jesus says, "You cannot serve both God and mammon (mammon)." In later Christian literature, it has come to be widely used as the personification of the power of enormous wealth to corrupt humans.
