A village in Kunigami County, Okinawa Prefecture, on the west coast of the central part of Okinawa Island (main island). Population 8,685 (1995). The eastern part of the town is a mountainous backbone that runs through the northern part of Okinawa Island, and 80% of the area is covered by forests, with a small amount of alluvial lowland along the coast. Since before World War II, it has been a purely agricultural village, mainly cultivating sugarcane. In recent years, the mountainous areas have become home to a growing number of vegetables and flowers for shipping to the mainland, but red soil pollution of the sea due to mountain reclamation has become serious. Broiler livestock farming is also popular. The coast is part of the Okinawa Kaigan Quasi-National Park, and there are many swimming beaches and scenic spots such as Cape Manzamo and Cape Maeda.
