Tukhāristān (English spelling)

Japanese: トゥハーリスターン（英語表記）Tukhāristān

Refers to the area in northern Afghanistan today. The name was used during the Islamic period and means the land of the Tukhari people. It was also called Tokhara (吐火羅) or Tohara. This area has long been a key transportation point connecting India, Western Asia, and Central Asia, and the name of the Tukhari people is already mentioned in Strabo's Geography, and it is thought that the Da Xia in the Records of the Grand Historian is the same as the Da Xia in the Dayuan chapter. Xuanzang describes them as Tokara in Volume 1 of his Records of the Western Regions of the Great Tang Dynasty, and points out that the writing, language, and customs of the area are different from those of Sogd in Central Asia and the Indian world south of the Hindu Kush Mountains.
