Jan Mayen (Island)

A volcanic island in the North Atlantic Ocean, located at 71°N and 8°30'W, north of Iceland, and part of Norwegian territory, it is composed of basalt erupted in a fracture zone that crosses the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Its area is 380 ^km2 . In the north is Mount Beerenberg, 2,277 m above sea level, and a large glacier flows northwest from the central crater to the sea. It was discovered by H. Hudson in 1607, and has been part of Norway since 1929. In the autumn of 1970, an eruption occurred along a 6 km long fracture. In winter, it is at the southern limit of drift ice, and is occasionally surrounded by ice.

北大西洋，アイスランド北方，北緯71゜，西経8゜30′にあるノルウェー領の火山島で，大西洋中央海嶺を横切る断裂帯に噴出した玄武岩よりなる。面積380km²。北部に標高2277mのベーレンベルグBeerenberg山があり，中央火口から北西へ大氷河が海まで流下する。1607年にH.ハドソンによって発見され，1929年以降ノルウェーに属する。1970年秋に，長さ6kmの断裂に沿って噴火が起こった。冬は流氷の南限にあたり，まれに氷に囲まれる。
