A painting term found in documents from the Heian period. It is thought to refer to pictures of stories full of sentimentality that were favored by aristocrats and women of the imperial court. In terms of technique, it is a heavily colored work of art, and is assumed to be in a style similar to that of the Tale of Genji Illustrated Scroll (Tokugawa/Goto version). There is also an interpretation that the term "male paintings" that appear in documents from the same period refer to line-drawing-oriented paintings that are stylistically opposed to female paintings, but the meaning cannot be made clear from the examples of the term alone.
