Haikai poems for the purpose of memorial services for the dead and for reminiscing. As with tsuizon renga, they sometimes included sutras and the name of the dead. There were also rules about how they were written, and in particular words that were in conflict with the meaning, such as "lost darkness," "falling into hell," "suffering," and "sorrow," were to be avoided. Famous works include Sadamuro's tsuizon haikai (Notes on tsuizon haikai) (1642) for his late mother, and Basho's tsuizon haikai (included in Kareobihana (Withered Owl) (1694)). Another unique work is Seijuro's tsuizon yatsuko haikai (1667). [Inoue Toshiyuki] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
