Mabuchi-shi

Japanese: 馬淵氏 - まぶちうじ

A medieval samurai family originating from Mabuchi, Gamo County, Omi Province (Omihachiman City, Shiga Prefecture). A branch of the Sasaki clan. According to the Sasaki clan genealogy, Hirosada, a descendant of Sadatsuna, was the first to claim the name Mabuchi. For generations, they were powerful vassals of the Rokkaku clan, the military governor of Omi and a feudal lord in the Warring States period, and played an active role as deputy military governor of the Rokkaku clan from the beginning of the Northern and Southern Court period to the first half of the Muromachi period. In particular, Yoshitsuna, Hirosada's great-grandson, was particularly active during the Enbun and Sadaharu eras (1356-68), and it is clear that he was a senior vassal who supported the Rokkaku clan's territorial politics.

中世の武家。近江国蒲生郡馬淵(滋賀県近江八幡市)より起こる。佐々木氏一族。佐々木氏系図によれば定綱の後裔である広定が初めて馬淵氏を称した。代々近江の守護･戦国大名六角氏の有力家臣で，南北朝時代の初めから室町時代前半にかけては，守護六角氏の守護代として活躍した。とくに広定の曾孫にあたる義綱は，延文･貞治年間(1356‐68)に活躍の跡が顕著であり，六角氏の領国政治を支えた重臣であったことがうかがえる。
