Austria has been a key transportation route between the east and west of Europe and the north and south since prehistoric times. Combined with its abundant underground resources such as salt, copper, and iron, many ethnic groups and tribes have come and gone, and many changes and mixtures have occurred, resulting in a very diverse cultural trend that colors Austrian social life. The main ethnic culture is that of the Germanic Bajuvar tribe, and it is also mixed with the ethnic cultures of the Alemanni and Franks in the west of Austria, the Slavs in the southeast, the indigenous Illyrians, Celts and Romans, and the Huns, Avars, and Magyars who invaded the land. Christianity is now the dominant religion, but pagan cultures continue to live on in subtle aspects of life, changing and enriching Austrian folk culture. Austrian folk culture is a complex culture that is part of the Christian cultural sphere, but when viewed at the folk culture level, the aspect of its integration with pagan culture can be clearly seen, for example, in annual events.

The prehistoric period of Upper Austria begins with the Hallstatt Iron Age (1000-900 BC). In the 6th century AD, the Bajuvar (Bavarian) people came from southern Germany and settled in the region. They are the people who created and developed present-day Austrian culture.

　オーストリアは，先史時代以来ヨーロッパの東西，そして南北交通路の要衝として，また塩，銅，鉄等の地下資源の豊富さと相まって，諸民族，諸種族の頻繁な来往と交替，そして混交が生じ，その結果きわめて多彩な文化潮流がオーストリアの社会生活を彩るにいたっている。その主軸をなす民族文化はゲルマン民族のバユバールBajuvar族であり，オーストリア西部のアレマン族，フランク族，南東部のスラブ族，そして先住民族のイリュリア人，ケルト人あるいはローマ人，この地を侵略したフン族，アバール族，マジャール人等の民族文化も入りまじり，現在ではキリスト教が支配宗教となっているが，異教的な諸文化も変貌しながら生活の微細な面にまで生き続け，オーストリアの民俗文化を多彩にしている。オーストリア民族文化は一つの複合文化であり，キリスト教文化圏の一環をなしているが，民俗文化レベルでみると異教文化との複合という様相が，たとえば年中行事のうちにも，はっきりと認められる。…
