Machines used for forest management and forestry business can be broadly divided into silviculture and tending machines and felling and transportation machines. In a broader sense, they also include forest road and erosion control construction machines. (1) Silviculture and tending machines are machines used for forest creation, and include those used in nurseries and those used in mountainous areas for afforestation, such as brush cutters and planting hole diggers. Silviculture work is often carried out on steep mountainsides and is hard work, but it is not easy to mechanize. Brush cutters for site preparation and underbrush cutting and planting hole diggers for digging planting holes for reforestation are portable machines that use the same one-cylinder, two-stroke, air-cooled gasoline engine as chainsaws, but machines that can be attached to tractors have been developed.

森林の管理ならびに林業経営のために使用される機械をさすが，これを大別すれば育林･保育機械および伐木集運材機械に分けられる。また広義には林道･治山工事機械も含める。(1)育林･保育機械は森林の造成に用いる機械で，苗畑で使用するものと，刈払機や植穴掘機など育林のため山地で使用するものがある。育林作業は傾斜の急な山腹で行われることが多く重労働であるが，機械化も容易ではない。地ごしらえや下刈り用の刈払機や植林のための植穴を掘る植穴掘機はチェーンソーと同じ1気筒2サイクル空冷ガソリンエンジンを用いた可搬式機械であるが，トラクターに装着して作業を行うものが開発されている。
