Insect repellent treatment

This process makes fibers insect-resistant by adsorbing chemicals. It is mainly applied to wool. The method is to dissolve 1-1.5% of the wool's weight in water with organic insect repellents such as Mitchin FF and Oiran CN, which have a chemical structure similar to that of acid dyes, and soak the wool at 40°C for 10 minutes. Then add 2% of the wool's weight in acetic acid and Glauber's salt, and heat the wool to 80°C or higher for 15 minutes. After that, the chemicals are adsorbed in 25 minutes, so the wool is washed and dried. This insect-repellent effect is not affected by dry cleaning, washing in water about eight times, or sunlight, so it is also called a permanent insect-repellent method. Insects will either die of poisoning or become repelled by eating a small amount of this wool. It is necessary to be careful about the toxicity of these chemicals, especially strong ones.

繊維に薬剤を吸着させて防虫性をもたせる加工。おもに羊毛に施される。その方法は，酸性染料に近い化学構造をもつミッチン FF，オイラン CNなどの有機性防虫剤を，羊毛量の1～1.5%量水に溶かし，40℃の状態で 10分間浸し，羊毛量の2%の酢酸，芒硝を加え，加熱して 15分間で 80℃以上にする。そのあと 25分間で薬剤が吸着されるので水洗して乾燥する。この防虫性はドライクリーニングにも，8回ぐらいの水洗濯にも，日光にも影響されないので永久防虫法ともいう。虫はこの羊毛をごくわずか食べて中毒死するか忌避するようになる。これら薬剤については，強力なものは特に毒性に十分の注意が必要である。
