Ondol - Ondol

Japanese: オンドル(温突) - オンドル

A heating system found in the Korean peninsula and northeastern China. A horizontal pit is made under the floor, stones are placed on top of it, soil is applied, and then oil paper is lined to create a chimney, and a fire is lit from one side of the pit to heat the room. Smoke escapes from the chimney on the other side of the pit. In northeastern China, it is called a "kan" or "kan" floor. It is usually efficient as it uses waste heat from cooking, but is not suitable for humid places such as Japan.

朝鮮半島，中国東北にみられる暖房設備。床下に水平坑を作り，その上に石をのせ土を塗り，さらに油紙を目張りして煙道とし，その一方のたき口から火をたいて室内を暖める。煙はたき口の反対側にある煙突からぬける。中国東北では【カン】，【カン】床などという。通常炊事の廃熱が利用され効率はよいが，日本など湿気の多い所では不向き。
