1903‐31 A white American cornetist who was active in the early jazz era. Born in Davenport, Iowa. His real name was Leon Bismark Beiderbecke, but he was better known by the nickname Bix Beiderbecke. He is said to have mastered the piano and cornet by himself from an early age, but he is also said to have been taught by the legendary virtuoso Emmett Harty, who came to the town when he was about 15 years old. After playing in an early white band, the Wolbelins, he became a star soloist with the Gene Goldkette Orchestra and the Paul Whiteman Orchestra.
