King Geunchogo

The 13th king of Baekje, Korea (reigned 346-375). He effectively defended against the invasion of Goguryeo, and in 371 he attacked Pyongyang. It is said that Goguryeo's King Kokkugen died from a stray arrow during this battle. In that same year, he moved the capital to Hanseong (near present-day Seoul) and appointed Goheung, a scholar, as his secretary, which marks the beginning of record-keeping in Baekje. In 372, he sent an envoy to Eastern Jin Dynasty and appointed General of the East as the governor of Lelang, and this is probably King Geunchogo.

朝鮮、百済(くだら)の第13代の王（在位346～375）。高句麗(こうくり)の侵入をよく防ぎ、371年には平壌を攻撃した。高句麗の故国原(ここくげん)王はこの戦中、流れ矢に当たって死んだという。この年、都を漢城（いまのソウル付近）に移し、また博士の高興(こうこう)を得て書記のことを任せたが、これが百済における記録の開始とされる。372年東晋(とうしん)に使節を送り鎮東将軍領楽浪(らくろう)太守に封ぜられたと『晋書』にある百済王餘句(よく)とはこの近肖古王のことであろう。
