A ctenophore (illustration) of the family Ophiophoridae of the class Tentacleata. A long, flat jellyfish with a belt-like shape. Widely distributed in warm waters, it is collected in Sagami Bay and Toyama Bay in summer. Large ones can reach 1m in length and 5cm in width. The body is made of agar and is transparent, with an opening in the middle of the body and one short tentacle on each side. Of the eight rows of ctenophores, four are short and the remaining four are long. It swims by moving the cilia of its ctenophores and snaking its body. 有触手綱オビクラゲ科の有櫛(ゆうしつ)動物(イラスト)。帯のように長くて扁平な形のクラゲ。暖海域に広く分布し,夏に相模湾や富山湾で採集される。大きなものでは長さ1m,幅5cmになる。体は寒天質で透明,体の中央に口が開き,その両側に短い触手が1本ずつある。8列の櫛板列のうち,4本は短く,残りの4本は長い。櫛板の繊毛を動かし体を蛇行させて泳ぐ。【今島 実】
