Dravidian languages

It is a language family with an ancient and rich cultural tradition that was used mainly by people living in southern India (Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh) and developed through mutual influence with Indo-Aryan languages. The ancestors of the Dravidian people, who have physical characteristics such as dark brown skin, thin bodies, high-pitched noses, and long heads, are thought to have migrated from the Mediterranean coast and entered the Indian subcontinent around 3500 BC, but were driven to southern India by the forces of the Aryan people who migrated en masse from the southern Urals about 2000 years later. As if to support this historical fact, some residents of the Baluchistan and Sindh regions of Pakistan still speak Brahi, which belongs to the Dravidian language family. Furthermore, recent research on inscriptions excavated from the ruins of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa suggests that the urban culture that flourished in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent for about 500 years from 3250 BC was probably of Dravidian origin.

Some speakers of Dravidian languages ​​have migrated to other countries, including Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and South Africa. If these people are included, the total population of Dravidian languages ​​is estimated to be over 130 million. The family can be roughly divided into three subgroups: (1) the Northern Group (Brahui, Maltese, and Kurukh), (2) the Central Group (Gondi, Kui, Kwi, Gadhva, Palji, Nike, Kohlami, Sabara, and Telugu), and (3) the Southern Group (Badaga, Kannada, Kodagu, Kota, Toda, Malayalam, Tamil, and Irula). It is not yet clear which group Tulu belongs to. Among these languages, the four with the largest populations are Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu, which are the official languages ​​of the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, respectively, and are written in different scripts. All Dravidian languages ​​have a triphonic sequence of dental, alveolar and retroflex sounds, nouns indicate case and number, pronouns indicate masculine, feminine and middle gender, and verbs change according to the person and number of the subject.

Due to the agglutinative characteristics of this language family, the existence of a kinship relationship between the two languages ​​has been studied through comparison with other languages ​​that share the same typological characteristics, such as Caucasian languages, Korean, Japanese, Sumerian, and the Uralic languages, but this has not yet been proven linguistically.

主としてインド南部（タミル・ナド州、ケララ州、カルナータカ州、アンドラ・プラデシュ州）に住む人々によって使用され、インド・アーリア諸語と相互に影響しつつ発達してきた、古くて豊かな文化伝統をもつ語族である。黒褐色の肌、痩身(そうしん)、中高鼻、長頭という肉体的特徴をもつドラビダ人の先祖は、地中海沿岸から移住して紀元前3500年ごろインド亜大陸に入ってきたと考えられているが、その約2000年後さらに南ウラル地方から集団移住してきたアーリア人の勢力によって、インド南部に追いやられてしまったものと考えられる。この歴史的事実を裏書きするかのように、パキスタンのバルーチスターン地方やシンド地方に住む一部の住民は、いまなおドラビダ語族に属するブラーフイー語を話している。また、モヘンジョ・ダーロやハラッパーの遺跡から発掘された碑文に関する最近の研究により、前3250年から約500年間にわたりインド亜大陸の北西部に栄えた都市文化は、ドラビダ系のものであったろうと考えられている。

　ドラビダ語族の諸言語を話す人々のなかには、スリランカをはじめマレーシア、インドネシア、ベトナム、南アフリカ共和国などの諸外国に移住した者もおり、これらの人々を含めると、ドラビダ語族の総人口は1億3000万人強に達するものと推定される。また、この語族は、大まかに次の三つの下位グループに分けることが可能である。（1）北方グループ（ブラーフイー語、マルト語、クルク語）、（2）中央グループ（ゴーンディー諸語、クイ語、クウィー語、ガドバー諸語、パルジ語、ナイキ語、コーラーミー語、サバラ語、テルグ語）、（3）南方グループ（バダガ語、カンナダ語、コダグ語、コータ語、トダ語、マラヤーラム語、タミル語、イルラ語）。なお、トゥル語がどのグループに属するかは、まだ確定していない。以上の諸言語のうち大きな使用人口をもつものに、タミル語、マラヤーラム語、カンナダ語、テルグ語の四言語があり、それぞれタミル・ナド州、ケララ州、カルナータカ州、アンドラ・プラデシュ州の公用語となっていて、互いに異なる文字によって書き表される。ドラビダ語族のすべての言語は、歯音・歯茎音・そり舌音の三音韻系列をもち、名詞は格と数を、代名詞は男・女・中の三性を示し、動詞は主語の人称と数に応じて変化する。

　この語族のもつ膠着(こうちゃく)語的特徴から、同じ類型的特徴を有する他の諸言語、たとえばコーカサス諸語、朝鮮語、日本語、シュメール語、ウラル語族などとの比較を通じて、親族関係の有無が研究されてきているが、まだ言語学的に証明されるまでには至っていない。
