Shishigatani Incident

In May 1177 (Jisho 1), Fujiwara no Narichika and his son Naritsune, close vassals of Emperor Goshirakawa, Fujiwara no Moromitsu (Saikou), Hossho-ji executor Shunkan, and Tada Yukitsuna of the Settsu Genji clan conspired to hunt down and destroy the Taira clan at Shunkan's Shikagatani Villa in Higashiyama, Kyoto. The plan was to take advantage of the approaching Gion Goryoe Festival to attack the Rokuhara residence and destroy the Taira clan in one fell swoop. However, the plan was discovered in advance by Tada Yukitsuna, who informed Taira no Kiyomori, and following Saikou's confession, the people involved were arrested and punished one by one. Saikou was sentenced to death, Narichika was exiled to Bitchu Province (Okayama Prefecture), and Shunkan, Naritsune and others were exiled to the isolated island of Kikaigashima at the southern tip of Kyushu. It was a huge shock to the Taira clan that the masterminds of this incident were relatives of the family (Narichika was the son-in-law of Taira Shigemori, and Naritsune was the son-in-law of Taira Norimori). After that, the relationship between the retired emperor and Kiyomori deteriorated further.

1177年（治承1）5月、後白河院(ごしらかわいん)の近臣藤原成親(なりちか)・成経(なりつね)父子、藤原師光(もろみつ)（西光(さいこう)）、法勝寺執行(ほっしょうじしぎょう)の俊寛(しゅんかん)、摂津(せっつ)源氏多田行綱(ゆきつな)らが、俊寛の京都・東山鹿ヶ谷山荘において平氏追討の謀議をした事件。その内容は、近づく祇園御霊会(ぎおんごりょうえ)に乗じて六波羅(ろくはら)屋敷を攻撃し、一挙に平氏滅亡を図ろうとするものであった。しかし、事は多田行綱の密告によって事前に平清盛(きよもり)に発覚し、西光の白状により関係者は次々に捕らえられ処罰された。西光は死罪、成親は備中(びっちゅう)国（岡山県）に、俊寛・成経らは九州の南の果ての孤島鬼界ヶ島(きかいがしま)に配流された。この事件の主謀者がとくに一家の縁者（成親は平重盛(しげもり)の婿、成経は教盛(のりもり)の婿）であったことは、平氏にとってきわめて衝撃であった。以後、院と清盛との関係はますます悪化していった。
