Augustodunum

...Population: about 23,000 (1982). Founded by the Roman Emperor Augustus (the town's ancient name, Augustodunum, is named after him), it occupied a position that could be called the Rome of Gaul. Remnants of this can be seen in the Porta Saint-André, the Porta Harou, and the ruins of the largest theater in Gaul.
