Japanese: コスツス（英語表記）spiral flag

It is a perennial plant of the Costus genus of the Zingiberaceae family, with 140 species found in tropical regions such as Central and South America and eastern India. The representative species of this family, C. speciosus (Koen.) Smith, is also known as Adonis japonica and is native to eastern India and Malaysia. The stems reach a height of 1-2m, branch well, and the leaves are somewhat fleshy, dark green, glossy, oblong, 15-20cm long. The flowers are white in spikes at the end of the stem, yellow in the center, and bright red in the bracts.

ショウガ科オオホザキアヤメ属Costusの多年草で，中南米をはじめ東インドなど熱帯地方に140種を産する。この仲間の代表種オオホザキアヤメC.speciosus (Koen.) Smithはフクジンソウの別名もあり，インド東部からマレーシア地域の原産。茎は高さ1～2mに達し，よく分枝し，葉はやや肉厚，濃緑で光沢があり，長さ15～20cmの長楕円形である。花は茎の先端に穂状花序につき白色で，中心は黄色，苞は鮮赤色である。
