A Jodo Shinshu Honganji sect priest in the Meiji period. His childhood name was Usaburo, and he also went by the pen name Yoon. He was born in Kanazawa, Kaga Province (Ishikawa Prefecture), and was adopted into the Tokuo-ji Temple in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1868 (Meiji 1). In 1872, he was sent by the head temple to study in England. After returning to Japan, he advocated reform of the sect's education system, and supported the Shinshu Daikyoin separation movement led by Shimaji Mokurai and others. In 1881, he proposed the abolition of the teaching position system. He held important positions in the sect, including Daigakurincho in 1898, Kangaku, the highest rank in the sect's academic hierarchy, in 1903 (Meiji 36), and Executive Director in 1911. He passed away on July 20, 1919. His books include the English versions of "Shinshu Hongi" and "Buddhism History." His grandson is the social activist Akamatsu Katsumaro.
