On-shin [Message]

〘Noun〙① To send a message. Also, that message. Arrival. Onshin. Inshin. [Shogaku Yomihon Jihen (1877)]② The unit of number of characters in a regular telegram. In Japanese telegrams written in katakana, ten characters (kana, numbers, punctuation, and parentheses) make up one onshin, and one onshin is added for every increase of five thereafter. [Glossary] (1) The List of Commonly Used Kanji gives "onshin futsū" as an example of the word "on" (sound) in, and notes that it can also be used as "onshin futsuu." "Onshin" is pronounced in Go-on, and "inshin" is pronounced in Kan-on. Until the Meiji period, it was "inshin."
(2) The word "onshin" appeared by 1877, but "inshin" was predominant until around 1887. After that, the two forms coexisted, but after the war, "onshin" became predominant.

おん‐しん【音信】

〘名〙① 便りをすること。また、その便り。おとずれ。音塵。いんしん。〔小学読本字引(1877)〕② 通常電報の字数の単位。片仮名の和文電報では、仮名、数字、句読点、括弧の記号一〇を一音信とし、以後五増加するたびに一音信を加える。[語誌](1)常用漢字表では「音」のインの語例に「音信不通」をあげ、備考に「オンシンフツウとも」としている。「おんしん」は呉音、「いんしん」は漢音読み。明治期になるまでは「いんしん」。
(2)「おんしん」の語形は明治一〇年(一八七七)までには出現したが、同二〇年ころまでは「いんしん」が優勢。その後両形共存するが、戦後は「おんしん」の方が優勢である。
