…These were mostly bishoprics such as Basel, Cologne, Strasbourg, and Worms. They were also free from the military service and tribute obligations to the emperor that the old imperial cities (Reichsstadt) had, and therefore their legal status was superior to that of the imperial cities. However, the distinction between them and the major imperial cities was not clear, and the two were often lumped together as "free imperial cities (freie Reichsstadt)."
