During the Edo period, it was a base for shipping on the Shingashi River, which continued until the early Taisho period. Formerly a purely agricultural village mainly focused on rice cultivation, it developed rapidly as a residential area for commuters to Tokyo after the Tobu Tojo Line passed through the city and the construction of the Tsuruse Housing Corporation housing complex in 1957.
