One of Myanmar's major rivers. Approximately 500 km long. It originates in Yamethin Township in central-southern Myanmar, flows south between the Pegu and Ashe mountain ranges, and empties into Martaban (Moutama) Bay. The river mouth is trumpet-shaped, and due to the influence of two ocean currents in the Indian Ocean, ocean waves 3-4 meters high flow back at high tide at a speed of 20 km per hour. Sediment is accumulating along the entire river course, making it almost impossible for ships to navigate. [Ohno Toru] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
