A legendary Iranian hero. His heroic tales form the central part of Firdausi's Shahnameh (Book of Kings). According to it, Rostam was born to Zar, the son of Sam, a ruler of the Zabulistan region in northern Sistan, and Rudaveh, and served three generations of the Kayanid dynasty, Kai Qubad, Kai Qaws, and Kai Khusrow, and achieved many military feats. Originally, the heroic tale of Rostam was one of the heroic legends handed down from ancient times in the Zabulistan region, and was widely retold among Iranians since the Sassanid period, but it is thought that Firdausi reconstructed it along with other Iranian legends. With the development of Iranian culture in the Middle Ages, the story spread beyond Iran and Afghanistan to Central Asia, India, and Asia Minor, and his name is still widely known today.
