Ninette de Valois

1898‐2001
Irish-born female dancer and choreographer. Her real name was Edris Stannus. She founded the Royal Ballet in England. She studied under Espinosa, Legato, and Cecchetti. From 1923 to 1925, she participated in Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. In 1926, she opened a private ballet school in London and met Lilian M. Baylis, the manager of the Old Big Theatre. She started choreographing ballets for the theatre, which developed into the Sadler's Wells Ballet, and in 1956, the Royal Ballet.

アイルランド生れの女流舞踊家，振付家。本名エドリス･スタナスEdris Stannus。イギリスのローヤル･バレエ団の設立者。エスピノサ，レガート，チェケッティに学ぶ。1923‐25年ディアギレフの〈バレエ･リュッス〉に参加。1926年私的なバレエ学校をロンドンに開設するとともに，オールド･ビック座の支配人ベーリスLilian M.Baylisと知り合う。その劇場のためにバレエの振付をしたのが始まりで，これがサドラーズ･ウェルズ･バレエ団に発展し，56年ローヤル･バレエ団となった。
