〘Noun〙 (coco) A large evergreen tree of the palm family. It is thought to have originated in Malaysia and is widely cultivated in the tropics. It is 20 to 30 meters tall and about 30 centimeters in diameter. The trunk has circular traces of fallen leaves, and many leaves grow in clusters at the tip, opening in all four directions. The leaves are pinnately compound, 4 to 5 meters long, with linear leaflets about 60 centimeters long. It is monoecious. It grows flower spikes 1 to 2 meters long from the leaf axils, with many male flowers at the top and 10 to 20 large spherical female flowers at the bottom. The fruit is flat-ovate with three edges, about 30 centimeters long and 25 centimeters in diameter. It turns gray-brown when ripe. The mesocarp is dry and made of thick fibrous material. The endocarp (core) is a hard, black-brown, spherical shell that surrounds the embryo and endosperm. The endosperm of young fruits is a slightly sweet juice that can be used as a beverage. The ripe and solidified fruit becomes the raw material for copra. The mesocarp is used for firewood, scrubbing brushes, brushes, brooms, mats, nets, ropes, etc., the kernels for fuel and crafts, the trunks for building materials, etc. In addition, the stems of the inflorescences are cut to collect the sugar juice and make alcohol (palm wine) and brown sugar.
