Chofu [city] - Chofu

Japanese: 調布[市] - ちょうふ

A city on the north bank of the Tama River in central Tokyo. It was incorporated as a city in 1955. During the Edo period, the city center was a post town on the Koshu Kaido road called Fuda Goshuku. It borders Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, across the Tama River. Since the opening of the Keio Line in 1913, it has developed into a residential area, and housing development is still remarkable today. The Keio Sagamihara Line branches off here, and the Chuo Expressway passes through the area. The area around Chofu Station is bustling with large department stores and shopping streets along the old Koshu Kaido road. Industries such as electrical equipment, machinery manufacturing, and food manufacturing are carried out here. Some of the city's attractions include Fuda Tenjin Shrine, Jindaiji Temple, and Jindai Botanical Gardens. Area: ^{21.58 km2} . Population: 223,593 (2010).

東京都中部，多摩川北岸の市。1955年市制。中心市街は江戸時代，布田(ふだ)五宿と呼ばれた甲州街道の宿場町。多摩川を境に神奈川県川崎市に接する。1913年京王線開通以来，住宅地として発展，現在も宅地化が著しい。京王相模原線が分岐し，中央自動車道が通じる。調布駅周辺は大型デパートや旧甲州街道沿いの商店街がにぎわっている。電気機器，機械製造，食品などの工業が行われる。布多(ふだ)天神社，深大(じんだい)寺，神代植物公園などがある。21.58km²。22万3593人（2010）。
