Toluidine - Toluidine

An aromatic amine. There are three isomers depending on the relative positions of the methyl and amino groups, all of which can be obtained by reduction of the corresponding nitrotoluene. It is also called aminotoluene or methylaniline. It is used in the synthesis of various dyes.

(1) o (ortho)-Toluidine is a colorless liquid. It is usually slightly yellowish, but turns reddish brown when exposed to oxygen or light. It is practically insoluble in water, but is highly soluble in ethanol (ethyl alcohol) and ether.

(2) m (meta)-Toluidine It can also be synthesized from p (para)-toluidine via 2-nitro-4-methylaniline, or by amminating toluene with methylhydroxylamine or hydroxyammonium salts in the presence of aluminum chloride. Its properties are similar to those of o -toluidine.

(3) p -Toluidine: Colorless crystals. Slightly soluble in water. Less soluble in ethanol and ether than the other two isomers.

芳香族アミンの一つ。メチル基とアミノ基の相対的な位置により3種の異性体があり、いずれも対応するニトロトルエンの還元で得られる。アミノトルエン、メチルアニリンなどともいう。各種の染料の合成に用いられる。

(1)o(オルト)-トルイジン　無色の液体。普通はやや黄色を帯び、酸素や光の作用で赤褐色に変わる。水にはほとんど溶けないが、エタノール（エチルアルコール）、エーテルにはよく溶ける。

(2)m(メタ)-トルイジン　p(パラ)-トルイジンから2-ニトロ-4-メチルアニリンを経て合成する方法、トルエンを塩化アルミニウムの存在でメチルヒドロキシルアミンまたはヒドロキシアンモニウム塩でアミノ化する方法などでも合成される。性質はo-トルイジンに似ている。

(3)p-トルイジン　無色の結晶。水にはわずかに溶ける。エタノール、エーテルに対する溶解度は他の二つの異性体より劣る。
