A unit of volume. Equivalent to 1 m3. A word meaning solid, it has been used in France and other countries as a unit to express the volume of firewood. It was officially recognized as one of the units of the metric system in 1879 and its symbol has been s or st, but it is a unit that is difficult to recommend from the standpoint of the current International System of Units (SI).
