Schrettinger, M.

...A discipline that combines theory and practice, focusing on the management and operation of libraries (information centers). Library science dates back to 1829, when Martin Schrettinger (1772-1851) of Germany pointed out that "no matter how excellent a scholar a person may be, he is not suited to be a librarian without special study, preparation, and practical training," and argued for the need for specialized library schools. However, it was not until 1886 that this was realized as the opening of a library science course at the University of Göttingen. It was a two- to three-year course required of university graduates who had completed a specialized course.
