...also called parturition. In viviparous animals, the fetus (fetus) is released from the mother's body after it has completed its development. The gestation period, number of offspring, and the condition of the fetus at birth vary depending on the species of animal. For example, even among rodents, mouse pups are born hairless and with their eyes closed, while guinea pigs are born with their eyes open and fully furred. Pups that are able to survive on their own immediately after birth are called precocity, while those that require long-term parental protection are called altricity. In general, herbivores tend to be precocial, while carnivores tend to be altricial.
