…In recent years, underdrains have become an especially important drainage method when field crops are introduced into paddy fields. Underdrains are used to collect water that descends by gravity into a suction pipe (the pipe and the buried trench are collectively called the suction drain) buried about 60 to 120 cm underground (Figure). In the past, suction drains were made of bamboo, gravel, brushwood, or clay pipes, but nowadays, various types of suction pipes are used, including polyvinyl chloride pipes, polyethylene pipes, corrugated pipes, mesh pipes, and clay pipes with many holes or thin slits of 1.5 to several mm in size. …
