…In 1831, Nat Turner's large-scale slave rebellion in Virginia frightened southern planters, leading to stricter slave control. In the same year, white liberationist W. L. Garrison founded the weekly newspaper The Liberator, which aimed to abolish slavery, and in 1833 he founded the American Anti-Slavery Society, which rallied the nation together. Unlike other liberationists, he also supported the expansion of women's rights, and many women leaders joined his movement. …
