...The history of the theater began when Emperor Joseph II, by imperial decree, took control of the Imperial Court Theater (Hofstheater), established in 1741 during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa, in 1776, and made it into a national theater to cultivate German theater. After the first period of a director's committee, Brockmann became director in 1889, taking over the classical style that had been attempted in Weimar, and during the period of Josef Schreyvogel (1768-1832) (1814-32) he established the foundations of a high-status classical style. H. Laube worked hard to perfect the art of speaking, and during the period of director Franz von Dingelstedt (1814-81) (1870-81) the style of stage set was established. ...
