A village in Higashiiwai County in southern Iwate Prefecture. Population 5,007 (1995). The Satetsu River, which flows in from the north, and the Senmaya River, which flows in from the east, join the Kitakami River on the western border. There are small alluvial plains along the river, and hills about 200m above sea level are widely distributed. Usuginu, the main settlement located at the confluence of the Satetsu and Senmaya rivers, once flourished as a river port for boat traffic on the Kitakami River, but fell into decline with the opening of the Ofunato Line (1925), which runs through the western part of the village. Agriculture, mainly livestock farming, tobacco cultivation, and rice cultivation, is the main industry. The section of the Kitakami River from Hiraizumi to Usuginu is a scenic spot named the Kitakami River Line, and is especially famous for the beauty of its autumn leaves.
