[Territorial rights]
The Soviet Union (now Russia), which has the longest coastline in the Arctic Ocean, claimed in 1926 the sector-shaped area between 32°04'35"E and 168°49'30"W (roughly the east and west of the mainland) and the North Pole. This territorial claim is based on the so-called sector principle, but it is not based on international law, and countries bordering the Arctic Ocean, such as the United States and Canada, do not recognize this claim. Ships from other countries are not allowed to pass through the territorial waters and straits within 12 nautical miles of the coast.
