A city in the Sakha Republic in eastern Russia. It is a river port city on the Bilyuy River, about 450 km west-northwest of the republic's capital, Yakutsk, and has a food industry. It was founded in 1634 as a winter camp for the Cossacks. During the imperial era, it was used as a place of exile, and NG Chernyshevsky and others were exiled there. It is connected to Yakutsk by highways and waterways. It has a population of about 7,000.
