…Broadly speaking, it refers to an indicating instrument or indicator, but when simply referring to an indicator, it usually refers to a pressure gauge, that is, an instrument or device that detects and observes the gas pressure in the cylinder of a piston-type machine such as a piston engine, steam engine, or reciprocating gas compressor. When a graph is recorded using this to show the relationship between the pressure in the cylinder and the crank rotation angle (time) or the piston stroke (gas volume in the cylinder), it is called an indicator diagram, and analysis of this graph provides important information for engine research and development, such as the combustion state and the valve operation state, and can also be used to monitor the performance and operation of machines in operation. By calculating the area enclosed by the indicator diagram (pressure-stroke volume diagram), the thermodynamic work (indicated work or indicated horsepower) done by the gas on the piston can be directly calculated. …

The change in steam pressure in a cylinder during one reciprocating movement of the piston, that is, the forward and return strokes, is shown in Figure 4. This is called an indicator diagram, and in an actual engine, it can be drawn using an indicator. Note that this diagram only shows the left side of the piston, but the area enclosed by this shows the amount of work produced by the engine.
