A town in Kuma District in the southeastern part of Kumamoto Prefecture. It occupies the northeastern edge of the Hitoyoshi Basin, upstream of the Kuma River. The main settlement developed as a distribution center for forest products, and after the opening of the Yumae Line in 1924 (which became the Kuma River Railway in 1989), it developed into a commercial town. There are also many small factories producing lumber, shochu, etc. Yuyama Onsen is located northeast of Yumae Station. 48.37 km2 . Population: 4,375 (2010).
