Sakaida Kakiemon

Japanese: 酒井田柿右衛門 - さかいだかきえもん

A potter from Arita, Saga Prefecture. The first generation (1596-1666) worked on improving white porcelain and blue and white porcelain, then studied the technique of akae in Nagasaki, and around 1640 he succeeded in firing the first akae in Japan. His works are elegant, with motifs of cloud dragons, phoenixes, pine, bamboo, and plum painted in thin lines on a milky white base. From the time of the first generation, they were exported overseas, and imitations known as Kakiemon-te were made in the West. His descendants subsequently took on the name, and the 15th generation Sakaida Kakiemon (1968-) took on the name in 2014. → Imari ware

佐賀県有田の陶工。初世〔1596-1666〕は白磁，染付の改良に努めた後，長崎で赤絵の技法を学び，1640年ころに日本最初の赤絵焼成に成功した。作品は乳白色の素地に細い線で雲竜，鳳凰，松竹梅などの文様を描き気品高い。初世のころから外国に輸出され，西欧で柿右衛門手と称される模倣作が作られた。その後子孫が襲名して，第15代酒井田柿右衛門（1968年―）は2014年に襲名。→伊万里焼
