A plaintiff's official in a criminal case. A national organ that files prosecutions, requests the court to apply the law fairly, supervises the execution of trials, and performs other duties authorized by law as a representative of the public interest (Prosecutor's Office Act 4). There are five types of prosecutors: the Prosecutor General, Deputy Prosecutor General, Chief Prosecutor, Public Prosecutor, and Deputy Public Prosecutor (Article 3). Public prosecutors are government officials who exercise prosecutorial power individually, but they form a unified, hierarchical organization nationwide and act as an indivisible entity (principle of the unity of prosecutors). Although they are basically administrative officials, because they perform duties related to the exercise of judicial power, they are given strong legal status protections comparable to those of judges.

A representative comedy by Russian author N. Gogol. First performed in 1836. Set in a provincial town in Russia, the play depicts, with bitter satire and deep pathos, the comical commotion that ensues when a group of rude and ignorant bureaucrats, including the mayor, who is abusing his authority and committing fraud and bribery without a second thought, misunderstand a fashionable young man from the city, Khlestakov, who happens to show up at their house, and mistake him for a prosecutor. This work, which sharply exposes a shameful side of Russian society at the time, was heavily criticized when it was first performed. This masterpiece marked a new era in the development of Russian theater in the first half of the 19th century.

刑事事件についての原告官。公訴を行い，裁判所に法の正当な適用を求め，かつ裁判の執行を監督し，その他公益の代表者として法令上権限を付与された事務を行う国家機関 (検察庁法4) 。検事総長，次長検事，検事長，検事，副検事の5種類がある (3条) 。検察官は，ひとりひとりが検察権を行使する官庁であるが，全国的に統一的，階層的な組織を成しており，不可分一体のものとして活動する (検察官一体の原則) 。基本的には行政官であるが，司法権の行使にかかわる職務を行うものであることから，裁判官に準じて法律上強い身分保障が与えられている。

ロシアの作家 N.ゴーゴリの代表的喜劇。 1836年初演。ロシアのある田舎町を舞台に，職権を乱用し，詐欺，収賄を平然と行なっている町長をはじめとする判事，病院長，郵便局長，地主といった粗野で無知な官僚一味が，ふらりと舞込んだ都会のハイカラ青年フレスタコフを検察官と勘違いしたことから巻起る滑稽な騒ぎを，辛辣な風刺と深いペーソスをたたえた筆致で描く。当時のロシア社会の恥部ともいうべき一面を鋭くえぐりだしたこの作品は，上演と同時に激しい非難を浴びた。 19世紀前半のロシア演劇の発達に新時代を画した名作。
