Post office - Eki-teishi

Japanese: 駅逓司 - えきていし

This was the government agency in charge of transportation and communications in the early Meiji period. It was established in April 1868 (Meiji 1) as part of the newly established Accounting Office following a revision of the Dajokan (Grand Council of State) system. At the time, land transportation was in serious difficulty due to a sharp increase in official military and administrative travel and the impoverishment of post stations and auxiliary villages. When it was first established, the Post Office was in charge of relaying horses and men on the various roads and promoted reform of the post station system, but encountered great difficulties due to resistance from villages. In June 1869, it came under the jurisdiction of the Civil Affairs Office, and in August of the same year, it came under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, and in March 1871, a government-run postal service was established between Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.

明治初期における交通通信をつかさどる官庁。1868年(明治1)閏4月，太政官官制の改定にともない，新設の会計官中に設けられた。当時の陸上輸送は，軍事･行政上の公用通行の激増と宿，助郷（すけごう）の疲弊によって，深刻な困難に陥っていた。発足当初の駅逓司は諸道の人馬継立（つぎたて）を管掌し，宿駅制度の改革を進めたが，村々の抵抗によって困難を極めた。69年6月民部官，同年8月民部省の所管となり，71年3月，東京～京都～大阪間に官営郵便を開設した。
