Chand (English spelling)

Japanese: チャンド（英語表記）Cand

A court poet in western India in the late 12th century (?). Dates of birth and death unknown. His personal name Chand is sometimes followed by the word bardāi, meaning court poet, and is considered part of his name. He was born in the same year as King Prithbirāj of Ajmer, served in the king's court throughout his life, and is said to have died together with him in the midst of war. At the end of the 12th century, many small Hindu kings were under attack from Muslims from the west and fought back bravely, but the king of Ajmer, under Chand's service, was known for his bravery.

12世紀末(？)の西部インドの宮廷詩人。生没年不詳。個人名チャンドのあとに，宮廷詩人の意のバルダーイーbardāīという語を付して，彼の名の一部とすることもある。アジュメール王プリトビーラージと同年に生まれ，同王の宮廷にずっと仕え，戦乱のなかでともに死んだといわれる。12世紀末には群小のヒンドゥー王侯が，西方からのイスラム教徒の攻撃にさらされ，果敢にそれに抗していたが，なかでもチャンドの仕えるアジュメール国王は勇猛をもって知られていた。
