A city in the southeastern part of Kochi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1959. It occupies a peninsula where Cape Muroto is located, and is mostly mountainous and hilly, with a narrow coastal plain. The city center is on the west coast, and it developed as a fishing base for tuna and bonito, with the well-maintained fishing ports of Murotsu and Tsuro at its center, which have undergone several renovations since the feudal era, but has been in decline in recent years. Vegetable and fruit cultivation is thriving. It is a tourist base for the Muroto-Anan Coast Quasi-National Park, and is served by buses from Kochi City and Aki City. 248.18 km2 .
