Ogarukaya - Ogarukaya

A perennial grass of the family Poaceae (APG classification: Poaceae). The culm is clumpy and erect, 0.6-1 meter tall. In August-September, the tip of the culm branches shortly and produces numerous inflorescences. The plant is usually reddish purple. The inflorescence is wrapped in boat-shaped bracts and has two inflorescences, which form a row of spikelets. The spikelets have two florets in pairs, one stalked and without awns, and the other stalkless and with awns. It grows in the grasslands of the hills from Honshu to Okinawa and Ogasawara. The basic species with a slightly smaller inflorescence is distributed in southern China, Southeast Asia, and India. The name corresponds to Megarkaya. Plants of this genus, such as lemon grass and citronella grass, are widely used for their aromatic oils.

イネ科（APG分類：イネ科）の多年草。稈(かん)は株立ちし、直立して高さ0.6～1メートル。8～9月に稈の先は短く分枝して多数の花序をつける。植物体は普通は赤紫色を帯びる。花序にはボート形の包葉に包まれて2本ずつの小花序がつき、小穂が列生する。小穂は2小花をもち、対(つい)をなし、一つは有柄で芒(のぎ)がなく、一つは無柄で芒がある。本州から沖縄、小笠原(おがさわら)の丘陵地の草原に生える。花序のすこし小さい基本種は中国南部、東南アジア、インドに分布する。名は、メガルカヤに対応してよばれる。この属の植物でレモングラスlemon grassやシトロネラグラスcitronella grassなどはその芳香油が広く利用される。
